Lessons Learned From a Year of European Open Science Training (ORION Project)

The focus of this workshop will be sharing lessons learned from the ORION Open Science project delivering open science training to researchers, funders, and research managers across Europe and facilitating an interactive exchange of knowledge between participants about challenges and solutions for effective Open Science training. The session is open to anyone who is engaged in Open Science training and advocacy.

Workshop abstract

Two of the biggest obstacles to Open Science becoming the new normal are a lack of awareness and a lack of practical skills. Therefore, in order for the Open Science movement to become embedded in the research infrastructure it is necessary to deliver training to a range of stakeholders, such as researchers, research managers, and funders. The ORION Open Science project has been delivering training workshops on Open Science across Europe for over a year and has recently created an online Open Science course. These workshops are revealing important lessons about what training methods are effective, what areas researchers and research managers find challenging and engaging, and what workshop participants identify as next steps.

In this workshop these lessons would be presented and some of the key training methods shared. The presentation will be of practical and theoretical interest as it identifies not only an analysis of participant responses to training, but details of effective training methods and differences in approaches with different stakeholders e.g. researchers and funders.

Following this would be an interactive session where participants could exchange their own experiences, knowledge, and ideas about Open Science training. This workshop will be based on an adaptation of the Future Search methodology, participants will first identify challenges, they will then outline ideal training scenario, and finally discuss practical solutions to make this a reality. The workshop will be creative and collaborative in nature. It is hoped, in the spirit of open knowledge, that the workshop will inspire participants to adopt new training methods or adapt existing ones based on what they have learned from the session. The session is open to anyone who is engaged in Open Science advocacy.

target audience

The session is open to anyone who is engaged in Open Science training and advocacy. This could be research support staff e.g. librarians or project officers who are delivering training in their institution or project, or it could be researchers who are advocating or training to other researchers.

Session content and format

The focus of this workshop will be sharing lessons learned from the ORION Open Science project delivering open science training to researchers, funders, and research managers across Europe and facilitating an interactive exchange of knowledge between participants about challenges and solutions for effective Open Science training. The session is open to anyone who is engaged in Open Science training and advocacy.

The session will start with a brief presentation outlining the lessons learned from ORION Open Science training. The majority of the time will be dedicated to the interactive section of workshop which will be based on an adaptation of the Future Search methodology: participants will first identify challenges, they will then outline ideal training scenario, and finally discuss practical solutions to make this a reality. The workshop will be creative and collaborative in nature.

The presentation will be of practical and theoretical interest as it identifies not only an analysis of participant responses to training, but details of effective training methods and differences in approaches with different stakeholders e.g. researchers and funders. In addition, the interactive session will be lively and will allow participants to learn from each other and communicate openly about their ideas and concerns relating to Open Science training.

Learning outcomes

The participants should have an understanding of the training methods used in the ORION training workshops and why they were effective. They should also understand how participants in the ORION training workshops responded to different areas of Open Science and what this might reveal about wider trends. In addition, they will be able to articulate their own experiences, ask questions of the facilitators and other participants, and identify solutions as a group. In addition, it is hoped, in the spirit of open knowledge, that the workshop will inspire participants to adopt new training methods or adapt existing ones based on what they have learned from the session.
