In the larger context of Open Science, the workshop will present and discuss a number of priorities and recommendations compiled in the report from previous two workshops and adding to previous work aimed at ensuring that services supporting research data are effectively providing a technical ecosystem for FAIR data. This workshop is aligned with two of the conference’s main topics and it will resonate with its broader expert audience. It will tackle one of the challenges it raises, namely the lack of embedded tools and services supporting Open Science.

Workshop abstract

FAIR won’t happen by magic! Its existence depends on the availability and sustainability of services that support the creation, (re)use and preservation of FAIR research outputs. This workshop is the third and last of a series designed to explore, discuss and propose recommendations on how existing data infrastructures can evolve and collaborate to provide services that support the implementation of FAIR data Principles, in particular in the context of building the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

The first two exploratory workshops invited service providers, research infrastructures and users in the research community to consider implementation stories presented by selected case studies and share their perspectives and vision of what it entails to produce FAIR data. Participants also discussed the role of research institutions and other stakeholders, took stock of existing services and their FAIR maturity, and finally identified gaps and defined priorities to align and combine these services to provide a FAIR data ecosystem. Based on the insights from the initial two workshops, a short report has been drafted – which will be made available in advance of this workshop – highlighting common challenges, priorities and presenting a set of initial recommendations aimed at the stakeholders and particularly the EOSC Governance.

This final workshop co-organized by FAIRsFAIR, RDA Europe, OpenAIRE, EOSC-hub and FREYA will seek feedback from a broader audience aiming for a set of practical guidelines to make services support FAIR. It will also reposition the FAIR data discussion into the Open Science context: is enabling FAIR data sufficient for services to fully support Open Science in practice? what is required for their integration into a FAIR data ecosystem?

This workshop will target service users, service and e-infrastructures providers, national representatives, and scholarly communication experts. Past workshops targeted service providers, research Infrastructures, and research support staff.

  • Introduction | by Hylke Koers | 15 min
    The first part will introduce the workshop series and a present the draft report and recommendations from Workshops I and II.
  • Group discussion | 60 min
    The second part will be collaborative and engage the audience in moderated group discussions to discuss and refine the draft recommendations with a particular focus on the Open Science perspective (e.g. aspects of stewardship or preservation). This part will be structured according to several activities, designed to validate and map the draft recommendations into a concise list:
    • Introduction by the moderators and modus operandi | 5 min
    • Review the recommendations: Do these resonate with the audience and what’s missing? | 10 min
    • Prioritisation exercise: Which recommendations are of the highest priority? | 15 min
    • Stakeholder mapping: Which stakeholders/service providers are involved in the implementation and support of these recommendations? What is the role of EOSC in enhancing the landscape? | 15 min
    • Wrapping up and defining questions for the panel | 15 min
  • Panel |45 min
    The last part will be a panel with representatives from EOSC Working Groups and EOSC related projects as respondents to the preceding presentations and questions emerging from group discussions.
