Application of RRI and Open Science in Public Service: bridging the gap between society and policy and decision makers

Organisers & Speakers: Gonçalo Praça - Ciência Viva, Olga Glumac - Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação - SPI
Duration: 2 hrs
Room: Ribeira II Hall

The workshop will provide tools on how to better approach, engage and integrate society in solving local challenges by using design-led and co-creation methodologies (closely linked to the open science and open innovation for whose solution is important to practice RRI). Taking this into account, the workshop will be particularly relevant for policymakers, and research administrators who work with design and co-creation processes and are responsible for the public engagement at their institutions. It will propose methodologies for tackling local challenges together with its citizens.

Workshop abstract

The session “Application of RRI and Open Science in Public Service: bridging the gap between society and policy and decision makers” will be developed by Ciência Viva and Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação (SPI), partners of the H2020 project – SISCODE: Co-design for Society in Innovation and Science. The workshop will aim to provide tools on how to better approach, engage and integrate society in solving local challenges using design-led and co-creation methodologies (closely linked to the open science and open innovation for whose solution is important to practice RRI). Taking this into account, the workshop will be particularly relevant for policymakers, and research administrators who work with design-led and co-creation processes and are responsible for the public engagement at their institutions. It will propose methodologies for tackling local challenges together with its citizens.

The format of the 2-hour workshop will be quite practical. A brief introduction about design-led and co-creation processes and methodologies will be given followed by practical group exercises in which the participants will be asked to develop and define steps for the implementation of a strategy on how to engage the public on solving a specific local challenge (provided by Ciência Viva and SPI).

By doing so, the participants will be able to further enhance their knowledge on the promotion, communication, and exchange of co-creation and design learnings and methodologies while working on local challenges.

target audience

The main audience for our workshop will be the policy makers, and research administrators interested in or with roles in managing design-led and co-creation processes at their institutions. In addition, the workshop is also aimed at those who are responsible for the public engagement at their institutions.

Learning outcomes

The format of the 2-hour workshop will involve group discussion, and hand-on exercises. The exercises will be aimed at developing and defining steps for the implementation of a strategy on how to engage the public on solving a specific local challenge (provided by Ciência Viva and SPI). The exercises will involve discussion on:

  • How to define the main objectives of the challenge;
  • How to understand the co-creation value;
  • Take into account the elements (available resources, time, support, opportunity, space and capacity) that influence directly the application of the methodologies in the specific context;
  • Define and overcome barriers and challenges.

In the end of this workshop, the participants are expected to have a higher knowledge of:

  • How to promote, communicate and exchange co-creation and design learnings and methodologies while working on local challenges;
  • How to embed the values and principles of co-creation into the fieldwork, especially when developing local stakeholders’ network;
  • How to ensure ownership/sense of belonging by everyone in the co-creation ecosystem;
  • How to build sense of shared responsibility between all partners;
  • Use and reflect on design-led methods and their appropriation to individuals’ daily setting;
  • How to observe and share impact of local change.
