This workshop [conducted by CO-OPERAS IN members] will engage the SSH community in defining FAIR data in their disciplines, in exploring possible solutions to address the multilingualism, in focusing on practical solutions to create a FAIR ecosystem

Workshop abstract

Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) are characterized by the fragmentation of research fields, across many disciplines and sub-disciplines, usually grounded in regional, national and linguistic specific communities, resulting in a major impediment to their discovery and to their reuse from outside the specific and often small communities where they were produced. Moreover, machine readable tools and materials are rarely available and often incomplete or non-interoperable, hence accessibility and reuse are far from optimal in these fields.

Therefore, the realization of an actual and complete Open Science environment for SSH needs to address technical, organizational and cultural challenges deriving from these fragmentation and heterogeneity. The achievement of such objectives will ensure an adapted integration of SSH data into the EOSC.

In order to achieve this goal, we need a preliminary definition of what “data” means in the SSH and how the FAIR principles can apply.

The GoFAIR Implementation Network CO-OPERAS, linked to OPERAS (Open Access in the European Research Area through scholarly communication) RI, intends to address those challenges through the implementation of a FAIR ecosystem for and with the SSH communities. This ecosystem should take into account the diversity of SSH data production, type and dissemination. The workshop will thus be focused on three main topics:

  • Data: How do we define “data” in the SSH? How do the FAIR principles apply?
  • Ecosystem: What are the cultural or technical challenges for potential convergences at European and international levels? Are they a question of practices, standards, funding, twists in behavior?

target audience

The workshop is supposed to gather all the actors involved in scholarly communication in the SSH, with a particular focus on researchers and repository managers.

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes will be:

  • a shared definition of FAIR data in the SSH;
  • a use case on FAIRification cooperation.

Agenda

The workshop will engage the SSH community in defining FAIR data in their disciplines, and in focusing on practical solutions to create a FAIR ecosystem.

Topics and formats - focus groups, demos and use case presentations - will be diverse throughout the session in order to ensure a strong level of interaction and provide useful feedback as well as applicable knowledge to both the audience and the CO-OPERAS team.

The workshop will particularly benefit from the direct engagement of the SSH community throughFocus Groups in debating the FAIR definition (according to the #1 Recommendation of the Turning FAIR into reality report) and addressing concrete issues.
