The roadmap to better food: Using ICT and Open Data to Overcome Barriers in the Agriculture Value Chain
Workshop abstract
In order to address the emerging societal challenges within the agri-food sector in the context of big data, a shift in mindsets and research culture is required to seize the opportunity of Open Science. The integration of open research and experimental data with farmers’ local knowledge, and their exploitation by data infrastructures will allow the significant advancement of related research in terms of tools, content, practices and proofs of concept. It can thereby increase creativity and innovation throughout the entire public and private R&D chain in the agri-food area.
The work of the CAPSELLA, e-ROSA and AgInfra+ projects covers the aspects above in a complementary way: The e-ROSA project seeks to build a shared vision of a future sustainable e-infrastructure for Open Science in agriculture in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) agenda, thanks to the co-development of a common roadmap by and for involved research communities and key stakeholders related to scientific data and research infrastructures. The CAPSELLA project develops a data infrastructure and innovative data driven solutions, together with farmers’ communities, food networks and other actors, tailored to their needs and requirements and covering the whole spectrum from seed to food. AgInfra+ project aims to empower selected agricultural communities with Virtual Research Environments that foster collaboration and the Open Science principle and provide innovative solutions in analysis, visualization and management of their data.
The session will inspire the audience to discuss the importance of open data in agri-food and the current and potential evolution of infrastructures that can support Open Science in this field. It will focus on how to link generic e-infrastructures and domain-specific ones, preparing the vision of the targeted e-infrastructure for open science in agri-food research.
