Making EOSC Training more FAIR

How can support and training offered by the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) be more effective? Which training and guidance resources are needed at the EOSC level? How can we ensure they can be found and used? How can training and guidance resources, i.e. materials and event information, be pooled effectively across the EOSC? Jointly organized by the Community of Practice (CoP) for Training Coordinators and LIBER, this workshop will cover recent developments in EOSC Skills and Training and discuss recommendations for the EOSC. The workshop will result in a set of concrete steps from the training community to improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability of EOSC training resources.

Workshop abstract

Since 2018 there is a CoP for Training Coordinators for training programmes of research and e-infrastructures in the EOSC. The CoP has monthly online meetings on new developments in training, shares best practices and organizes joint events. It has become a global community that seeks to meet in person regularly. The work of this community has been driven by the European Commission (EC) interest for inviting EOSC-related projects to flag initiatives of common interests and promote joint activities.

At the same time, LIBER — through its Digital Skills for Library Staff and Researchers Working Group — has been working on mapping and supporting European skilling and training initiatives available for library staff and researchers, with particular attention to those focused on Open Science.

Training resources, events and tools can be found on the websites of training organisations, university libraries, universities, European funded projects, research and e-infrastructures. Making those resources better findable and accessible is a wish which is often repeated during workshops focused on EOSC training, and organised by EOSC projects such as EUDAT, EOSCpilot, OpenAIRE, FOSTER, EOSC-Life, SSHOC and EOSC-hub. Training coordinators feel the need to look over the fence of their own organization, project or domain and are looking for resources that are already there, or events that their audience might be interested in. To improve the discoverability of training resources, the first version of the EOSC portal website had a section on Training and Support for EOSC. This workshop focuses on how an EOSC training portal should ideally be structured to make training services and resources more findable and accessible.

The workshop will start with introductory presentations on current practices of EOSC training services and resources and recent recommendations relevant for EOSC skills and training. In breakout groups we will discuss how the recommendations on training and skills can be implemented for the EOSC stakeholder groups.

In the second part of the workshop, we will look at current practices around publishing training resources, events and tools, as well as the metadata and features for reuse. The plethora of training resources (MOOCs, tutorials and guides) can be found in repositories, websites, GitHub, and may be in domain specific central catalogues. Taking into account the results of the first part of the workshop, participants will discuss, in three group discussion rounds, concrete next steps on several key topics such as training metadata, a catalogue of catalogues, and other steps for making EOSC training more FAIR.

    From the perspective of each EOSC stakeholder group the following questions are discussed in each group:
    • What training and guidance resources are needed at the EOSC level?
    • 1. Where should they be most effectively located to get noticed and used?
      • a. Institutional level, e.g. through RDM services
      • b. National level, e.g. through national service providers
      • c. Discipline level, e.g. through Research Infrastructures, EOSC cluster projects, etc.
      • d. Cross-domain level, e.g. through horizontal EOSC services
      • e. Thematically, e.g. through stakeholders addressing specific challenges
    • 2. How can training and guidance resources, i.e. materials and event information, be pooled effectively across the EOSC, e.g
      • a. By manually selecting and curating training and guidance resources?
      • b. By aggregating trainings automatically from selected providers?
      • c. By aggregating training portals?
      • d. By identifying people able to respond to discipline-specific questions from researchers about making data FAIR?

  • Discussion in groups (45 minutes) on:

    • 1. What would be the ‘must have’ functions of EOSC competence centre? Functions like an EOSC skills and training catalogue, EOSC skills and competences framework like FAIR4S, information on skills gaps, train-the-trainer support, guidelines for curricula building, course evaluations, support of certification for training materials and events, guidance on finding repositories, information on community requirements and FAIR services and resources, issues and debates about implementing the FAIR principles, etc.
      2. How can we work together to deliver these functions?
      3. What needs to be changed in our current practices (e.g. describing and sharing our learning resources) to deliver these ‘must have’ functions of a EOSC competence centre?

  • Wrap up (20 minutes) steps forward - recommendations for EOSC to coordinate portals for training and support; planning of future activities from CoP and/or projects / initiatives / organisations involved.
